Every year on October 16, countries around the world come together to celebrate World Food Day, an international observance established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
The day serves as a reminder of the universal right to adequate food and nutrition. More than just a celebration of food, it is a global call to action to end hunger, promote sustainable agriculture, and ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to healthy and sufficient nourishment.
For 2025, the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future” highlights the global connection and need for collaboration in creating a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous, and food-secure future.
The celebration of World Food Day is closely linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030.
The celebration underscores worldwide endeavors to guarantee universal access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food, directly aligning with this goal. It also connects to other SDGs—such as Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), which promotes reducing food waste and sustainable food systems, and Goal 13 (Climate Action), as climate change directly affects agricultural productivity and food security.
1. Avoid food waste.
Plan your meals, buy only what you need, and use leftovers creatively. Reducing waste helps conserve resources and ensures that more food reaches those who need it.
2. Support local farmers and producers.
Purchase fruits, vegetables, and other goods from local markets or community-supported farms. This strengthens local economies and rewards the hard work of Filipino farmers and fisherfolk.
3. Grow your own food.
Start a small garden at home, even with pots or recycled containers. Planting herbs, vegetables, or fruits promotes self-reliance and appreciation for how food is produced.
4. Share meals or donate food.
Join feeding programs or share home-cooked meals with those in need. Acts of kindness like these reflect the true spirit of World Food Day.
5. Practice sustainable eating habits.
Choose seasonal and plant-based foods, use less plastic packaging, and conserve water when cooking or cleaning. These small lifestyle changes help protect the environment and promote sustainability.
These acts align with the broader goal of achieving sustainable development, ensuring that future generations can still enjoy the same abundance of food and natural resources.
