The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and the University of the Philippines Alumni Engineers, Inc. (UPAE) have launched a student financing program designed to help qualified engineering students at the University of the Philippines continue their studies with greater financial flexibility. The partnership marks BPI’s first student financing partnership with a university alumni organization through the UPAE Study Now, Pay Later Program.

Supported by the Student Loan Guarantee Fund (SLGF) entrusted to UPAE, the program provides qualified engineering students with access to financing of up to P500,000 to help cover education-related and other essential expenses while completing their studies. Initially, the program aims to support up to six qualified engineering students per semester. Eligible applicants are evaluated and endorsed by UPAE in accordance with its program guidelines, while BPI provides the financing facility and loan servicing.
“The Study Now, Pay Later Program was established in 2016 by former UPAE President Lilit Tumbocon as a legacy initiative to help deserving students at the UP College of Engineering overcome financial challenges and complete their education. Since then, alumni and donors have generously supported the program, reflecting our shared belief that helping a student earn a UP engineering degree is one of the most meaningful ways of giving back,” said Victor Emmanuel Ahorro, President of UPAE.
The financing facility offers a deferred period of up to 48 months, followed by a repayment period of 12 to 60 months, with funds disbursed monthly through a BPI deposit account. The program is available to UP Diliman students enrolled in an engineering course who are at least in their second year.
For BPI, the initiative reinforces the Bank's commitment to developing financial solutions that address the evolving needs of Filipinos throughout their life journey. As the country continues to build capabilities in engineering, technology, infrastructure, digitalization, sustainability, and other emerging fields, investing in students today can help strengthen the pipeline of professionals who will contribute to the country's long-term growth.
“Through this partnership, UPAE and BPI hope to extend that support to today's students by providing an additional financial option as they pursue their education. At BPI, our vision is to build a better Philippines, one family, one community at a time. This partnership is a meaningful way to bring that vision to life. When we help a student continue their education, we help create opportunities not only for that individual, but also for their family and the communities they will one day serve,” said Alma Aldip, Head of Unsecured Lending and Cards - Product and Sales at BPI.

By helping students stay on track toward completing their degrees, BPI aims to enable more Filipinos to pursue opportunities that can improve their lives and create lasting value for their communities. Interested students may coordinate with UPAE regarding the program's application and evaluation process.
