Summer season isn't over! Whether you're squeezing in a last-minute summer getaway or already planning next year's trip, you can make it both fun and sustainable. Here are a few easy ways to go green on your next summer adventure.

1. Choose a nearby location.

Choosing a location that is nearby or one that doesn't need a plane ride to go to already reduces carbon emissions. It can either be a quick hiking trail or even a visit to a spacious park for an afternoon picnic.

2. Travel in groups.

By traveling in carpools and/or in groups, it lessens the footprint per person involved. Traveling in groups means fewer cars on the road, which reduces traffic congestion. Fewer vehicles also contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

3. Pack reusables for your picnic.

Disposable plastic items are one of the most common forms of litter found in oceans and natural areas. Using reusable cutlery, cups, and plates, as well as bringing water tumblers, will lessen the use of disposable containers. You can even choose some cute, trendy designs for your reusables for added aesthetic.

4. Bring a container for your food scraps.

Bringing home food scraps and compostables instead of throwing them away during an outing is sustainable for the environment because it helps reduce landfill waste while creating healthy soil at the same time. Composting turns food scraps into nutrient-rich soil, which in turn helps grow more plants, retains moisture (reducing the need for watering), and naturally suppresses plant diseases—reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

5. Use nature-friendly skin essentials on your trip.

Your skincare choices can also be sustainable, from your sunscreens down to your cleansers! If you're going to the beach, make sure you use reef-safe sunscreens. Traditional sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that harm coral reefs.

Make Every Trip Count—for You and the Planet

You can make the most of summer while also being mindful of the environment. Whether it's picking a closer destination, packing reusables, or being mindful of your skincare, small steps can go a long way in creating a positive impact. Travel smart, tread lightly, and enjoy the rest of the season sustainably.
